  • The male manatee to our right subtly touches the left flipper of an interested female manatee. Even though the large manatee mating herds are active, there is much socialization that goes on between manatees that is curious and gentle. It is refered to as "cavorting" by the manatee researchers. This is a peek at an undisturbed, natural behavior while this manatee winters in the freshwater springs.   • Manatee mother and calf take breaths simultaniously. Many researchers believe that manatee breathing is a learned behavior and it is not uncommon for cow and calf pairs to breath together. The bond is tight between the mom and her calf for nearly two years. as there is so much to learn. They are navigating  out of a manatee-only resting area thus the USFWS markers to the left.
