Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, endangered. A mother manatee is visiting the submerged tree roots with twin female calves in the warm springs on a cold winter day. Rubbing or chewing on tree roots could be investigation, or it could be scraping of certain root covers for a snack as there is little to eat near the freshwater springs. Twins are rare and these are not documented but evidence suggests they are twins and not a calf plus an adoptee. Another manatee insists on being there too. Rare series. Horizontal orientation. Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Kings Bay, Crystal River, Citrus County, Florida USA.
