Florida manatee, Trichechus manatus latirostris, a subspecies of the West Indian manatee, endangered. Theo, my husband, is the snorkeler demonstranting "let the manatee come to you". Passive observation with one's hands to oneself is how to interact with this endearing and often "friendly" marine mammal. There is strong sunlight and blue spring water with schools of mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus) on a cool Florida day. Horizontal orientation and polite, passive observation. Three Sisters Springs, Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Kings Bay, Crystal River, Citrus County, Florida USA.
