My first manatee post of the ‘07-’08 manatee season! And as I have said I plan to keep going with at least two posts a week about our manatee friends.
I named this photograph “Blue Sky Smiling at Me” because - well it just struck me as that type of message. This manatee was extremely curious about my camera. That makes it hard to take shots of the whole manatee at a distance, but it makes it good for intimate photographs like this manatee right after taking a breath.
You can see with the greenish water here the visibility wasn’t very good but it shows that with underwater photographs if you can concentrate on the assets of the environment, notably blue sky and manatee here, the other factor of greenish-low-viz water is greatly minimized.
There was an unexpected cold front that came in over last weekend (Nov. 3/4). A tropical storm that was turning over the Bahamas actually sucked in colder air from up north and we went from a hot, sticky, late summer - into Winter, seeming to skip the fall season. We will see how the weather holds now. No complaints from me though. Early cold fronts just mean the wonderful manatee will be visiting the warmer springs at Crystal River in greater numbers. Stay Tuned! Best, Carol
Above is a “smiling” manatee. :-).... Actually it is a manatee who was curious about my camera, then surfaced to breathe. This photograph is the result - an interesting expression. At least on a beautiful blue-sky Florida day like today manatee do have something to smile about!
